The purpose of this study was to investigate whetherrnpreviously found decreases of prefrontal electrocorticalrnactivity in weightlessness during parabolic flights arerndue to hemodynamic or altered central-nervous activityrnwithin the brain. Two near-infrared spectroscopyrn(NIRS) probes placed on the prefrontal cortex were usedrnto record changes of oxygenated- (O_2Hb) andrndeoxygenated (HHb) hemoglobin concentration duringrnten parabolas of nine un-medicated subjects taking partrnin a parabolic flight. Compared to normal gravity,rnO2Hb decreased with the onset of hypergravity1 andrnconsiderably increased during microgravity, whereas norndifference for hypergravity was found. HHb showed nornsignificant change during hypergravity, but a decreasernduring hypergravity and a slight increase inrnmicrogravity. Based on the finding of this study,rnpreviously found changes in electrocortical activityrncannot only depend on a redistribution of blood volume.
