Responses of slow and fast fibers in soleus andrnplantaris muscles of adult rats to overloading by therntendon transection of synergists were studied.rnOverloading-related hypertrophy was noted in the slowrnfibers of plantaris and soleus, although the magnitudernwas greater in plantaris. Five genes with minorrnexpression in slow soleus muscle were identified byrnmicroarray analysis. Base-line expressions of theserngenes in slow fibers of plantaris were also low. Further,rnrepressive effects of overloading on these genes werernseen in some fast fibers of plantaris, not in wholernplantaris and soleus. The data suggested that thernrepression of particular genes might be related to thernpronounced morphological response of fibers expressingrntype II, including I+II, myosin heavy chain (MyHC),rnalthough these genes with lower base-line expression inrnslow fibers did not respond to overloading.
