EFFECTS OF HDT BED REST ON EXCITABILITY OF THE SARCOLEMMA IN POSTURAL MUSCLES

Prolonged decrease in physical activity level during bedrnrest leads to a decrease in muscle mass and force. Arndecrease in protein synthesis should be one of the mainrncauses for the muscle atrophy and weakness.rnAdditionally, a decrease in the sarcolemmal excitabilityrnmay also contribute to the muscle weakness. After 21-rnday head tilt down (HDT) bed rest (BR) we have foundrnthat markedly decreased force in knee extensors andrnplantar flexors was accompanied by significantrnprolongation of the compound muscle action potentialrn(m-wave) in m. vastus lateralis (VL) (+3.5%) and in m.rngastrocnemius medialis (GM) (+8.1%). In this study, wernstudied effects of the 5-days HDT BR in the samernmuscles. 10 subjects were tested before, after, and 5rndays after the bed rest. In contrast to the 21-days BR,rnthe 5-days BR did not lead to changes in m-wavesrnparameters. These findings show that effects of thernHDT bed rest on the sarcolemmal excitability depend onrnits duration and are not directly associated with the fluidrnshift in lower extremities.
