Evaluation Model of Sustainable Development in Coastal Zone--A Case Study of Guangdong Province

Coastal zone is the area where ocean and land interact with each other and its ecosystem has the characteristics of being compound, marginal and active. Because of the special significance of coastal zone for human being and earth system, its sustainable development is an important integral part of global strategy of sustainable development. Based on the principle of coordinated development of the subsystems of coastal zone, such as economy, society, population, resources and environment, the paper establishes the assessment indicator system of sustainable development of coastal zone, sets up a dynamic coupling model of socioeconomic system and eco-environment system with the thought of system evolution in modern system theory, evaluates the coordinated development degree and evolutionary process of the two subsystems and finally makes positive analysis with Guangdong Province as the example. During the period from 1996 to 2007, coastal zone of Guangdong Province experienced a deep change from natural resources to ecological environment and from development intensity to use type. The coordination degree of socioeconomic system and eco-environment system started to go beyond 90° since 1998. Large-scale system formed by these two systems is in a state of degradation. The development degree of socioeconomic system goes far beyond the capacity of eco-environment and coordination degree is restricted.
