Effluents from textile mill dyehouses are inevitably highly coloured, are difficult to degrade biologically and contain substantial concentrations of inorganic salts and various heavy metals. A number of treatment methods, including ozonation, are often very effective for the treatment of troublesome industrial discharges. Therefore, the feasibility of treating typical dyebath effluents by ozonation alone and by a combination of ozonation and activated carbon adsorption, as well as ozonation and lime addition was investigated in some detail. Excellent colour reductions, but only limited TOC, COD and heavy metal removals, were obtained by ozonation in most cases. The data generated indicate that ozonation was more effective if it followed lime addition or carbon adsorption than if it preceded these treatment methods.
