A plating waste treatment plant was built to demonstrate the effectiveness of ozone treatment for the oxidative destruction of cyanides, cyanates and for the removal of copper and silver as their oxides on a plant scale. The plant is designed to treat all the waste from copper, gold and silver plating operations. A study program was carried out to evaluate the effect of process parameters, to identify and optimize key parameters, to establish capital and operating costs and to explore the possibility of producing an effluent suitable for recycling.rnResults of the study clearly show that ozone treatment rapidly and economically destroys copper and sodium cyanides. The reaction first produces cyanates which are oxidized further by ozone. Although the complete removal of cyanates was demonstrated, it was not practiced under optimum conditions since it is not required under local or federal standards.rnAt ozone dosages necessary to reduce cyanide concentration to 0.1 mg/l or less, treatment operating costs of $1.43/1,000 gal cyanide effluent and $1.32/l,000 gal total plating waste effluent were found. Total capital costs were $52,700.
