摘要

This paper reports on an exploratory study of computer mediated communication (CMC) which attempts to provide empirical evidence of the emergence of social norms in computer conferencing. This study employs two methodologies. Content analysis is used to examine the transcripts of several ongoing BITNET conferences in order to determine the structural- and content-related characteristics of messages posted to these conferences. A case study of one conference is used to focus on the ways in which participants attempt to change the subject of a discussion, as an example of one set of emerging norms in computer conferencing. The paper concludes that there are strong consensus-based norms emerging in this form of CMC which clearly influence the actions of participants in computer conferences.
