Quality of the surface of the particleboards is very important parameter especially in furniture industry. Deep scratches and craters arising at the edge during processing discriminate furniture boards. Economic and simple method of surface roughness inspection is commonly based on the effect laser beam scattering. The indicatrix of diffracted light is a Bessel function and every defect can be described as a sum sources of light. In our experiments we have observed that defects of characteristic "hole-like" geometry act as light "traps" due to multiple beam reflection inside the defect. Scratches are these type of defects. Absorbing of light by scratches and craters appears a very powerful effect, good observable with simple optical set up. The difference between a "Bessel indicatrix" and experimentally observed scattered light indicatrix is the measure of light energy absorbed in scratches. Critical geometrical condition of the "trap effect" is the value of defect deepness greater than 10 μm.
