摘要

A laser beam used to observe a surface cannot detect anything smaller in size than itself. In tandem, any waviness with a wavelength longer than the sampling length cannot be seen. Adjusting the size of the laser beam and the sampling length together can be used to optimize the measurement process. This information could be used to produce simple, economical, robust and accurate case-specific instruments for online surface roughness measurements. In order to evaluate the performance of different measuring methods, simulation is considered. Simulation may be used to define the correct parameters in order to detect certain types of roughness.
