Encasing cylindrical granular columns using tensile resistant materials induces greatrnimprovement in column strength. For an encased granular column subjected to axialrnload, the axial deformation and volumetric expansion causes lateral expansion,rnwhich stimulates circumferential strain and stress in the encasement and providesrnadditional confining pressure to the column. To obtain good predictions on columnrnbehavior using numerical analysis, complicated equations are required to describernthe mobilized friction and dilatancy angles for pure sand. This study analyzes thernbehavior of geosynthetic-encased sand columns assuming that the encased columnrndeforms with constant volume. A simple relationship between the inspired confiningrnpressure and encasement stiffness/column diameter ratio can be achieved throughrnconstant volume assumption. Simple steps were also provided to evaluate axialrnstress for an encased column. The assumption provides conservative, yet practicallyrnaccurate results without tedious analytical procedures. The only material propertiesrnand column geometry needed are the encasement stiffness, strength and columnrndiameter. The results from the present approach are compared with those obtainedrnfrom experimental and numerical analysis using complicated model.
