摘要

This paper presents the comparison of the American Concrete Institute (ACI),rnBritish Standard (BS) and Eurocode (EC) in the optimal design of a simplyrnsupported prestressed concrete beam. The technique utilised in this research is thernpiecewise linearisation method in which the non-linear equations are beingrnsimplified to linear ones and they are eventually solved using the simplex method.rnThe objective of the optimisation is to minimise the weight of the beam which at thernsame time will optimise the amount of materials used and therefore will produce thernmost cost-saving beam. The constraints are developed from the designrnrequirements, restrictions and limits as stipulated in the relevant code of practices.rnFrom the results obtained in this study, it has been found that the prestressedrnconcrete design based upon the ACI requirements is more economical than that ofrnEC, with BS being the least economical design.
