There has been an increasing number of studies on therntsunami hazards in the South China Sea region since thern2004 Sumatra earthquake. Many of them are carried outrnbased on tsunami scenario simulations, which adopt seismicrnsource models constructed from scaling relations betweenrnseismic magnitude/momentum and rupture parameters.rnVarious sets of scaling relations have been proposed onrnthe basis of different earthquake catalogues. In this study,rnwe perform synthetic tests to evaluate the impact of scalingrnrelations on the generation and propagation tsunami wavesrnin the South China Sea. Results show that the range ofrnthe affected coastline can be significantly different for anrnearthquake of the same magnitude using different scalingrnrelations. Additionally, the maximum tsunami wave heightrnnear major cities may vary as large as two times. Thus, itrnis worth further research on the choice of scaling relationsrnfor tsunami hazards assessment and the building of earlyrntsunami warning system .
