Sorbent booms and sweeps are used to both contain and collect spilled oil. Work conducted over the past two years has led to advances in the development of a protocol to test these tools in containment configurations. Coupled with the American Society for Testing and Materials standard sorbent protocol ASTM F726-99 (ASTM, 1999) which determines the ability of sorbent materials to soak up oil, this new containment protocol will help to determine the overall performance of booms and sweeps. The purpose of this project was to identify performance characteristics of sorbent booms and sweeps in a range of currents, from relatively low to fast flowing waters (greater than 1 knot). Historical testing has demonstrated that sorbent booms and sweeps have difficulties in containment when flows exceed approximately 0.75 knots. This paper documents the testing of sorbent booms and sweeps in multi-track configurations to determine their effectiveness and identify any modes of failure. Parameters of interest for this series of testing include a water uptake, ultimate oil retention, and containment capabilities when in a multi-track mode.
