Coated Conductor second generation (2G) high temperature superconducting (HTS) wire is attractive for its low-cost potential vis-a-vis the presently commercial first generation (1G) wire. AMSC is developing 2G wire as a form-fit-function replacement for 1G wire that meets or exceeds all specifications of currently available 1G wire, including critical current density, geometrical dimensions and mechanical properties. The low-cost fabrication process involves processing wide strips and subsequently slitting to multiple wires. We have demonstrated successful slitting of 2G conductors to 4 mm width with > 93% retention of the critical current density. Furthermore, we show two conductor geometries that can be used in commercial applications, namely the Neutral Axis wire and the Face-to-Face wire. To demonstrate the feasibility of the wire, we present joining and bend testing results on copper stabilized wire that has been slit to commercial width.
