Bsis weight (BW) variability on a paper machine represents a universal measure of sheet uniformity, both in the MD and CD sense. It is commonly believed that automatic Cross Direction (CD) Control can significantly reduce the BW variability in the CD sense. However, most of the investigations undertaken by EnTech in recent years show otherwise. This paper reveals some of the potential sources of variability that are not always adequately understood before implementing CD control on a paper machine. The paper explores the impact of sensor characteristics, data-box width, MD cyclic variability, and headbox internal design on the interpretation of CD data, and shows how some of these effects can seriously jeopardize the effectiveness of CD control. The paper also reviews the potential gains in CD variability reduction over the wavelength spectrum that are available from CD control, given the characteristic response of a CD actuator to the resulting profile at the reel. At best, the expected gains are modest and apply only to the longer wavelengths. At shorter wavelengths no improvement is possible, while amplification due to mapping misalignemtn is likely.
