A Preliminary Study on Developmental Changes of Metabonome in Serum of Suckled Piglets by an NMR-based Metabonomic Approach

This study was conducted to determine the developmental changes of metabonome in serum of suckled piglets using 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR) spectrometry. 18 naturally suckled crossbred piglets (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshine) were selected and blood samples were taken from jugular vein (10ml) at the ages of d 1, 7, and 21 after brith, respectively. The result showed 53 kinds of small molecule metabolites in serum of suckled piglets were detected with the age of growth, and energy metabolism and protein metabolism were in preference to fat metabolism in piglets. Key words: Serum, Metabonome, 1H NMR, Suckled piglets Biochemical changes in blood may reflect the tissue cells permeability change and the function of the body metabolic change. Metabolism is the total (bio)chemical changes in living organisms and metabolic activities are the basic features of living systems. Metabonome is the dynamic complement of the endogenous metabolites within the integrated biological systems (Tang and Wang, 2006). Nutritional intake may be natural lead to changes in endogenous metabolism of body, the changes are often be thought from the degree of ease, if only for a limited number of indicators to measure metabolic analysis may be difficult to capture such changes in metabolism, but if the Metabolic analysis of the overall group, it has greatly increased the information to capture the possibility of such a change (Tang and Wang, 2007). Metabolomics blood contains cells of each animal's metabolism information (including the host and bacteria), also contains interaction between a host of metabolic activity and flora (Hooper and Gordon, 2001; Xu, et al., 2003; Nicholson, et al., 2003, 2004,2005,2006), therefore, metabolomics study is the main metabolic path as a substrate and composition of metabolites of small molecule (MW <1000), through the study of metabonomics, can be a better understanding of blood metabolites change trends in developmental suckled piglets.
