Abstract: We have investigated the influence of interface effectsand CuO$- 2$/ plane orientation on transport propertiesof high temperature superconducting (HTS) thin films inYBa$-2$/Cu$-3$/O$-7$/-PrBa$- 2$/Cu$-3$/O$-7$/(YBCO-PrBCO) heterostructures grown by pulsed laserdeposition. Two unit cell ($APEQ 24 angstroms) thickYBCO films, isolated in c-axis orientedPrBCO/YBCO/PrBCO trilayers, are found to superconductat temperatures above 20 K, while films thicker than 6unit cells display bulk superconducting properties. Anepitaxial process has also been developed to grow YBCOfilms and YBCO/PrBCO heterostructures with the CuO$-2$/planes oriented normal to the film surface. Thesea-axis oriented films display transport propertiescomparable to the best c-axis oriented films and,moreover, are better suited to the fabrication ofsandwich-type Josephson junction devices by virtue ofthe longer superconductive coherence length normal tothe direction of the YBCO-PrBCO barrier interface.!13
