Increasing commercial pressures on railway companies as a result of privatisation and increasing rail traffic has led to a developing interest in systems that can monitor railway vehicles as a means to ensure that track or vehicles are not overloaded. However, existing systems are limited in application and can be expensive to install and to maintain. Consequently, they seem unsuitable to form part of a remote conditioning monitoring system suitable for anywhere on the railway network. Furthermore, existing products cannot measure the rail lateral forces caused by cant deficiency or excess on curves, or due to bogie hunting. This is becoming more important as new high-speed tilting trains come into service. The track force measurement system at present under development by Serco Railtest is called 'TrakCell' and is based on using a set of special load-measuring baseplates of an innovative design, for which a patent application has been registered. The paper to be presented will discuss some of the reasons for developing TrakCell and outline the measurement method adopted.
