In recent years, there has been considerable discussion on the subject of early selectionrnof the tunnelling construction method—at the design concept stage, and againrnlater, in the detailed design development stage. It was apparent from these discussionsrnthat a rationale was needed to become the basis for initial and subsequent discussions,rnas well as to be the basis for re-evaluation of the original construction concept as morerninformation, factors, criteria and critical influences were revealed as the early designrndevelopment progresses.rnThis paper describes a decision process and criteria as well as a methodology forrnearly determination of a preferred tunnel construction method(s) in conjunction withrnknown, unknown and other factors that would not only influence the tunnel design butrnalso the preferred final construction method(s). Specifically, this paper will address therntunnel construction method selection process between mechanized tunnelling (TBM)rnand conventional tunnelling (drill and blast) wherever conditions allow for a selection.
