The Roosevelt Station is one of the 2 intermediate box excavations on the N125rnContract of Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority’s Northgate Link ExtensionrnProject in Seattle, WA.rnDuring design, the Owner and Designer settled on secant piles and tie backs forrnsupport of excavation. After award of the contract, the Contractor expressed concernsrnabout lead times for material procurement for the secant piles and advised that theyrnwere looking at alternative support methods. The contractor proposed a slurry diaphragmrnsystem to address their schedule concerns and improve upon the leakage andrnsurface flatness requirements of the contract.rnThis paper presents the cooperative process undertaken by the Owner, Designer,rnConstruction Manager and Contractor to integrate the contractor’s concept into therndesign, identify and address potential concerns with the design change, proactivelyrnengage the city’s staff to streamline the permit review process and successfully completernthe installation of slurry diaphragm wall system. Issues and challenges that werernencountered during development and execution of the slurry diaphragm wall work arernidentified along with the steps taken to mitigate them.
