The actual global crisis, SMEs has reported a clear decline in sales via the severe demand shock, but the negative impact is further amplified by payment delays which add to the endemic shortage of their working capital and liquidity. The final result is an increase in reported defaults, insolvencies and bankruptcies. In this case a robust response for surviving to the pressure of falling sales, payment delays and the worsening access to credit is needed. The typical response is based on the following measures: cost-cutting to restore profitability and adjustment of production to lower demand levels; search for additional sources of liquidity; postponing of investment and expansion plans (M&A activity, new business ventures); an efficient use of innovation and the transfer of knowledge reinforced by a better absorptive capacity.rnA crucial element for SMEs to survive in turbulent and crisis periods is represented by their ability to adapt to the multiple constraints that arise in such extreme events. Innovation is a fundamental engine of transformation and growth, but also a strong instrument in the fight against the actual global crisis especially for emerging countries.rnA simple model that illustrates the role of innovation for SMEs in the aftermath of the actual global crisis is presented together with a set of examples that describe possible situations favorable for the small companies that have high marginal income and low levels of capital (with needs also lower the costs of depreciation of capital).
