It has been known for a long time that you can store energy in magnetic and electric fields. Storage using electric fields can only be short term because the finite conductivity of materials, and the low breakdown strength of insulators means that the energy density is rather low. Magnetic fields on the other hand can provide efficient energy storage for both long and short term applications and there is no magnetic breakdown strength, although there are of course limits to the magnetic fields we can generate.
