DURABILITY ASPECTS OF STEEL FIBRE REINFORCED CONCRETE

After about forty years of research, utilisation of Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) is progressively growing also in the field of structural elements. In particular recent studies have shown that it is possible to efficiently substitute conventional reinforcement (reinforcing bars or welded mesh) in slabs on grade and the shear reinforcement in prefabricated roof elements by using steel fibres. Since durability is a major topic in concrete structures nowadays, there is now an increasing need of a better understanding of SFRC behaviour in response to environmental actions. In the present work, durability of SFRC is investigated with particular attention to freeze-thaw resistance with and without de-icing salts, carbonation resistance, chloride and oxygen permeability. Results show that the addition of steel fibres does not influence properties of SFRC related to durability but enhance its toughness and post-cracking behaviour.
