RECYCLING OF POWER STATION COAL FLY ASHES AS BUILDING ELEMENTS TO BE USED IN PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTION

In this article, the insulating and mechanical properties of products containing fly ash as a major component ( > 75% w/w) are analysed. Fly ashes fom the combustion of pulverised coal in different Spanish thermal power plants (Los Barrios, Meirama and Lada) were tested with the aim of better defining the desirable characteristics of this type of ash (class F ASTM) with regard to the elaboration of insulating materials to be used in doors and fire-resistant screens in industrial buildings. Thus, the effect of different ashes was studied using gypsum as binder. After blending the ashes, binders and water (water / solids = 0.4), 50-mm-diameter, 200-mm-high cylindrical test probes were made; after a setting time of 28 days, they were placed in an oven and subjected to a fire resistance curve according to Spanish regulations (EN-UNE 1363-1). The insulating capacity of the cylindrical test probes was measured as the time needed to reach a temperature of 400℃ in the centre of the cylinder. In addition, the compressive strength, before and after the insulating capacity test, and the dynamic elasticity modulus of the test probes were measured. The results show that the origin of the studied ashes does not have a significant influence on the insulating capacity of the products. Nevertheless, different mechanical properties were observed due to the characteristics of the ashes. These results allow us to make a more general statement about the recycling possibilities of these types of by-products in useful constructive applications for the passive protection against fire; in some cases, the use of additives for improving the mechanical properties of the products is advisable.
