The National Ocean service (NOS) of the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is creating a data base of digital vector chart data for the production of Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC). These ENCs will be in the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) format as defined in Edition 3.0 of Publication S-57: IHO Transfer Standard for Digital Hydrographic Data. To provide ENC data to commercial mariners in a timely manner, NOS will produce ENCs for the 40 major commercial ports in the US. ENC Data will be compiled from original source materials where appropriate to provide the mariner with the most accurate data available. The ENC data base will be kept in continual maintenance (i.e., up to date on a weekly basis), allowing chart users to obtain vector data sets that contain the most up to date and accurate information. This paper will describe the NOS approach in more detail, as well as review the project's status to date.
