This paper aims to give a brief review of the gestation of, and requirement for, Integrated Navigation Systems (INS). This is followed by a description of the background to the IEC's input paper to IMO, a preliminary draft IMO performance standard, for its consideration. The input paper incorporates the concept of data fusion, decision support aid and automatic ship control in relationship to known and detected hazards.
