PHOENIX is a 1:7 down-scaled experimental vehicle to demonstrate automatic landing capabilities of future reusable launch vehicles (RLV's). The flight test campaign is planned to take place in spring 2004 at NEAT (North European Aerospace Test range) in Vidsel, Sweden. Successful control of such a vehicle demands an advanced GNC functionality. This paper gives an introduction into the PHOENIX navigation system design. A compilation of requirements imposed by guidance and control function are given. With respect to sampling rate, accuracy and delay, those requirements are rather comparable to missiles and fighter aircrafts than to conventional aircrafts. For accuracy and robustness reasons, a navigation concept has been choosen for PHOENIX, consisting of a combination of inertial navigation sensors, DGPS, altimeters and an air data system, as well as an Extended Kalman Filter algorithm. A modern software development approach based on rapid prototyping and autocoding has been established, to be compatible with a limited budget and a tight schedule.
