The navigation of space vehicles is currently performed by ground stations. This method involves significant resources, does not fully fulfill the requirements for instantaneous navigation and prone to operator errors. Contrary to that, on-board autonomous navigation of space vehicles will potentially overcome the intrinsic limitations peculiar to ground based navigation. Utilization of the Global Positioning System (GPS) is a natural choice for on-board navigation. However, GPS was not designed to be used in space and its space application is a scientific and technical challenge. Main difficulties of space-borne GPS receiver design are 1. Hostile environment - due to radiation only space qualified components shall be used but not all components of a typical GPS receiver are available in space qualified manufacturing 2. Limited computer processing power in space 3.High velocities including high mutual velocity of GPS satellite and user satellite 4. Many space missions are above the GPS constellation. It limits GPS visibility to 1-3 satellites in view The paper presents a complete design of an autonomous space-borne GPS receiver that uses only civil GPS signals on L1 frequency and market available components.
