Evaluation and Utilization of Maize Germplasm in the Breeding for the Quality of Starch

1100 maize cultivars and inbreds of all botanical subspecies as well as the carriers of thirteen endospermal mutants were tested for the starch and amylose content during three years in the region of Ukrainian Eastern Forest-Steppe. The most available genetic sources of high starch content were identified among flint and dent corns. Some cultivars and inbreds were notable for high and stable starch content even in the contrast climatic conditions. The starch content was inherited as positive over-dominance or incomplete dominance of the better parent and hasn't the negative correlation with the productivity. Utilization of endospermal mutants was the most effective method for the obtaining of starches suited to the special food technologies. The effect of the gene wx for the formation of starches completely consiststing amylopectin was fixed and independent from the recurrent parent genotype and growing climatic conditions. The level of amylose content in the starches of mutants ae and su_2 was developed as a result of its interactions with other, presumably a polygenic system. The possibilities of starch quality improvement in combination with the increasing of starch, protein and oil content were showed.
