Characterization of Backcross-Inbred Lines of Bread Wheat Using Protein and Isozyme Markers

Traditional wheat varieties like C-306M10, KH-65, and C-591 have got genes for drought, salinity resistance and quality, respectively. However, they possess inherent shortcomings for being tall and cannot be accepted for commercial cultivation. The yield advantage associated with Norin-10 has been exploited particularly in Mexican wheat varieties and their derivatives emanating from crosses with indigenous type. However, inclusion of other dwarfing sources like S-948A1 (Rht_1& Rht_2) and Tordo (Rht_3) have not been exploited hitherto. A set of backcross inbred lines (BILs) has been developed and these exhibit significant differences in plant height and other traits. These lines were characterized using protein and isozyme markers. Electrophoretic protein patterns revealed considerable differences among parents and lines derived from them. Also there was considerable variation among lines. Of the three isozymes (SOD, POX and MDH) studied, Peroxidase isozyme revealed maximum polymorphism. These studies will be useful in registration of potential material for further use in wheat breeding.
