Today optoelectronics (photonics) plays an important role in railway transportation. The various optoelectronic systems, arrays, and devices help save lives and improve safety. The historical aspects of optoelectronic development and their application for railroads in Russia are presented. The role of main creations in physics and optoelectronics for railways using will be discussed.
