By using the modified E_f method which is proposed as a simplified method for evaluating the load-carrying capacity of frame structures, the aim of this paper is to clarify the characteristics of the effective length, allowable stress and E_f value of cable-stayed girders according to the different ultimate strength curves of the columns. Furthermore, we propose a new formula for ensuring safety against instability of the girders, and explain its validity. It is shown that different factors of safety are obtained depending on the ultimate strength curves, of the flexural rigidity of the girder is low. On the other hand, almost the same factor of safety is obtained when the flexural rigidity is high. It is also shown that the proposed method gives a good estimation of the load-carrying capacity of cable-stayed bridges.
