Early development of the theory of structual stability showed that shell structures were complicated to analyze and large discrepancys in relation to tests were noted. One of the reasons was the fact that the effect of initial imperfections was not fully unerstood and part of the research effort was devoted to attempts to develop more accurate theories in search for better agreement between analyses and experiments. Today, the stability behavior of shells is well known and by use of modern powerful computers, complicated problems can be solved accurately. However, since initial imperfections and toher disturbances are of a random nature and are not known at the design stage, the theoretical knowledge is still of limited use to designers.
