A concept for a new structure of ergonomics standardisation has been developed by the Kommission Arbeitsschutz und Normung - KAN (Commission for Occupational Health and Safety and Standardisation) in Germany together with the German Standards Committee for Ergonomics (FNErg) within DIN. This concept provides for a hierarchical three-level structure, which is to a certain degree comparable with the CEN standardisation concept under the Machinery Directive (type A/B and C standards). Application of this concept to the field of personal protective equipment (PPE) would have certain advantages: First of all the concept would help to systematically consider aspects of ergonomics in PPE standardisation. The concept would also lead to more clarity, which is positive for standards users as well as for the experts developing ergonomics standards. In addition, the concept would help to avoid the development of standards conflicting with existing national regulations dealing with the health and safety of people at the workplace.
