Quantitative Comparison of Stress Maps from Numerical and Experimental Sources

Full-field stress is now expressed intuitively by computer images. In order to compare stress maps, it is common practice to calculate the difference of two computer images at corresponding points pixel by pixel; or to plot data along a lien across the maps and to include both experimental and theoretical or numerical results on the same axes. These approaches are used widely and usually a reasonable, quantitative conclusion can be made. However, for comparison of full-field stress in digital images from experimental methods (DIEM) and in maps from finite element method (FEM), it cannot be done by the first method because the map from the FEM is coarse. The method along a single line may not give more information about the relationship between the stress maps. In the present paper, methodologies for comparing full-field stress maps from the DIEM and FEM are discussed. A correlation coefficient r obtained from the coefficient of determination R~2 is used to measure the fitness of the two stress maps. Examples of quantitative comparisons of stress maps obtained from the DIEM and FEM are given.
