Galician (NW Spain) coast, one of the most intensivernareas of mussel production in the world, suffers from arnfrequent occurrence of a variety of harmful algaernblooms, often related to upwelling events. Chlorophyllrna and sea surface temperature (SST) data offer valuablerninformation for the study and detection of these events.rnIn this work, a series of six MERIS and MODISrnimages was used to analyse a complete upwelling cyclernduring July 2008 and two simultaneous MERIS andrnAATSR images acquired on July 22, 2008 were used tornstudy a high phytoplankton biomass which was thernresult of a strong upwelling event. In-situ data from arnSeawatch buoy and a field campaign were alsornavailable for this day. High chlorophyll a concentrationrnarea was mapped in this MERIS FR image using arnpreviously developed neural network based algorithmrntuned to the Galician Rias optically complex waters.rnThis area coincided with relatively low temperaturerndetected in the north path of the study area using thernAATSR image, whereas an area of warmer water wasrndetected at the south. Moreover, an ASAR image fromrnthe same date was analysed in order to detect thernepisode. This study was funded by PURGADEMAR.
