An evaluation of MODIS (Moderate resolutionrnImaging Spectroradiometer) and MERIS FRS (MediumrnResolution Imaging Spectrometer, Full Resolution)rnradiometric and Chlorophyll concentration ([CHL])rnproducts is presented concerning the Ligurian andrnNorth Tyrrhenian seas. A dataset of in situ datarncollected during different oceanographic campaigns inrnthese sea areas over the last three years is used tornassess the quality of these products. Different oceanrncolor [CHL] algorithms were taken into consideration:rnthe global MODIS algorithms OC3M [O’Reilly et al.rn2000] and MedOC3 [Santoleri et al. 2008], MODISrnand MERIS OC5 [Gohin et al. 2002], and MERISrnAlgal Pigment Index Ⅰ (Algal 1) [Morel and Antoinern2000] and Algal Pigment Index Ⅱ (Algal 2) [Schillerrnand Doerffer 1999]. The two global MODIS algorithmsrnshow the known overestimation of [CHL], which isrnparticularly evident in turbid coastal waters [Morel andrnGentili, 2009]. This problem is reduced by thernapplication of OC5 to both MODIS and MERIS data.rnThe MERIS Algal 1 algorithm performs poorly inrncoastal waters, while Algal 2 yields results similar tornthose of OC5. Considerations are finally providedrnabout the quality of the satellite data and algorithmsrnanalyzed depending on varying water opticalrnproperties.
