Our purpose today is to review the types of data the NTSB uses to create and validate reconstructions of accident scenarios and to describe the 3D engineering techniques that the NTSB uses in its accident analyses. Illustrations are drawn from several NTSB aviation accident investigations, including US Air Flight 427 in 1994, TWA Flight 800 in 1996, American Airlines Flight 587 in 2001, Air Midwest Flight 5481 in 2003, and recent runway incursion incidents.
