Briefly reviews the collaborative global evolution of the ETOPS rule of 2007. Examines how ETOPS has enhanced the safety and reliability of long-range flight operations. Describes how it is continuing to do so under this new U.S. regulatory updating. In addition to the U.S. ETOPS rule of 2007, the global aviation community is collaborating to update the requirements for extended-diversion-time flight operations on other fronts as well. Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) enacted its new Extended Diversion Time Operations rule late last July. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), European Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA)/European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), and other parties are likewise pursuing similar updates of extended operations regulations.
