Newly graduated Engineers and Technicians are usually left to train themselves by following a standard training program. This paper discusses the problems associated with inadequate initial training and presents some ideas to improve the situation. Programmes must be flexible to allow for personal customisation and also include achievable targets. The ideal for an initial training programme will be to instil an inherent desire for professional growth that will remain with the Engineer for life.
