Aged properties of materials can be significantly affected, detrimentally, by environmental and operational conditions; extrapolations from virgin properties or short-term tests have no value. Assessments of integrity for plant beyond design life then usually result from worst case scenarios which bear no relation to reliability; management by emergency can then follow. Whilst trends towards risk-based inspection schemes are presently in fashion it seems that the real issue of gathering relevant material data should also have high priority. In this paper, a broad specification for useful tests aimed at gathering data non-destructively and economically is suggested. Particular reference is made for components in the creep range where on-line data collection is needed. Three test procedures are described: micro-hardness, optical/video interferometry and small specimen punching. Principles involved in these methods are well understood and equipment in use is well validated. Examples are given in the paper which demonstrate utility in practice.
