摘要

This paper identifies the inter-relationships between air emissions and groundwater quality that may need to be evaluated during Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) preparation. Emissions-to-atmosphere can affect groundwater quality. Precedents documented in the groundwater literature include chlorofluorocarbons, sulphate from SO_2 emissions and tritium from thermonuclear testing. Despite such demonstrated linkages, this mechanism of groundwater contamination has not been extensively studied. Air emissions have potential to impact several Valued Environmental Components (VECs). Such VECs typically include soils, vegetation, surface waters and aquatic resources. Thus, air emissions that will accompany a proposed industrial development will usually be evaluated in the context of these VECs during EIA preparation. Groundwater is a VEC that is not commonly required to have an evaluation from an air emissions perspective. This paper gives guidelines on how to assess possible air emission impacts to groundwater quality if such an evaluation is a requirement.
