At a decommissioned sour gas-processing plant, the burial of amine reclaimer unit sludges has resulted in subsurface contamination with amines, amine byproducts, and salts. Data generated by prior investigations of the natural attenuation processes controlling the environmental fate of these contaminants were used to develop a remediation strategy for the amine-contaminated soils. The biodegradability of the amines, coupled with their relatively low mobility, indicated that bioremediation was an appropriate technology. The presence of salts required leaching of the soil. Based on these conditions, a 500 m~3 biopile was designed and constructed in 1998. The biopile, which included aeration, irrigation, and leachate collection systems, was operated in 1998, 1999, and 2000. The results from the biopile operation show that all identified amines, significant amounts of organic and inorganic nitrogen species, salts, and organic carbon were removed.
