Abstract: This paper explains the reason for the significantdifference of payload responses when different dampingmethods are applied. In dynamic analyses of spacestructures, three different types of damping matriceshave usually been employed: system damping, free-freecomponent damping and constrained component damping.This paper explains the reason for the discrepancies byconsidering a dynamic system composed of twosubstructures, each has two degrees-of-freedom. Theclose form expressions of the damping matrices areobtained on the same level of coordinates for directcomparisons, from which the reasons for the responsediscrepancies between different damping approaches intreating dynamic problems are interpreted. !5
