The predominant phase in the dark etching regions has been identified by Electron Backscatter Diffraction as cementite. The amount of the carbon required to form this phase must come from the lubricant which may explain why micropitting is observed in many different steels including those which have not been carburised.rnThe current observations suggest that the mechanism of micropitting in gears is linked to the phase transformations induced by the contact fatigue process. As a result of severe plastic deformation of asperities, microcracks initiate at the surface in the region of enhanced carbon content.rnThese cracks then propagate along the boundary of the transformed region until they reach the surface again to form a micropit.
