The high volume, vacuum thin film roll coalers in use in the industry are complex machines with sophisticated control systems. Finding the right combination of processes, coating materials, substrates, and equipment configurations in order to get the desired performance and throughput can be difficult. These specialized equipment configurations have been prone to breakdowns, which caused undesirable product performance, coating rates, or safety/environmental hazards. To mitigate these difficulties, many manufacturing, engineering, and equipment maintenance techniques have been developed by the military, aerospace, and private enterprise. One of these, Reliability Centered Maintenance 2 (RCM2), is a process to analyze the equipment found in a specific coating process. The RCM2 process provides a guide to determine the most technically appropriate and cost effective strategy to assure that the coating equipment performance improves, that costs are reduced, while improving safety and product quality. This paper describes how to apply RCM2 to both existing equipment and to proposed new equipment.
