A zero energy house was built as a real-life laboratory for innovative technologies along with a conventionally built house. Energy saving features includes insulated slab, thermal mass walls, high-performance windows, radiant barrier, and the energy efficient HVAC system. Solar energy was added to supplement the domestic water heating and to generate electricity via roof-integrated PV tiles. Real-collected data throughout the course of over 2years demonstrate that on a whole the ZEH is a real zero traditional electricity user and does have lower heating/cooling loads. In order to insolate the energy contribution from every singe item, simulation was carried out. Very good agreements were found between the real energy usage and predicted results on total building energy usage. Therefore individual energy saving feature was evaluated. The ranked results show that the most energy saving comes from the compact fluorescent lights and the next highest savings are due to the high performance HVAC system.
