The extreme efficiency of producing bubbles via electrolysisrnof water has been put to use in a new design for an integratedrnMEMS microvalve. These valves are designed to be part of largerrnsystems in which pumps, mixers and chemical sensors arernfabricated simultaneously into one integrated device. The powerrnconsumption, flow characteristics and movement of the valve havernbeen observed. The valve design used in this research requires onlyrn4.3 pW for actuation. This is more than 4 orders of magnitude lessrnthan the power required by similar thermally-actuated valvesrndemonstrated in previous research. With the current design a ratiornof 4.7 has been achieved between open and closed flow resistance.rnIn addition, the partially closed valve has demonstrated anrnintermediate flow resistance, demonstrating the possibility ofrnproportional control.
