Data collected to date regarding settlement in landfills is highly variable. Trends exist in the data that suggest that recirculation does affect the time rate of settlement in landfills. Although trends exist in the data, site-specific operations can highly dictate the amount and time rate of the settlement. These operations include the aggressiveness of recirculation, waste type, and compactive effort when placing waste. In the future, the data collected from the highly instrumented bioreactor sites may be better suited to predicting settlement due to recirculation activities mainly due to consistent operation of the facilities and the regular collection of settlement data.
