Benchmarking of Steamflood Field Projects in Light/Medium Crude Oils

A benchmarking study on 43 steamflood of light/mediumrncrude oils was performed, to find attractive reservoirrncharacteristics and successful operational practices that arernused worldwide. More than 30 successful projects werernanalyzed and summarized in a database, which includedrnreservoir properties, best operational practices and resultsrnobtained. On average, an incremental oil recovery of 19%rnOOIP was obtained by steamflooding, during a projectrnlifetime of up to seven years.rnBased on the successful project characteristics, werndeveloped a model to rank potential reservoirs. Reservoir datarnwere analyzed using standard statistical methods forrnproperties, such as: API gravity, initial oil saturation, reservoirrntemperature, porosity, initial pressure, depth, net pay, viscosityrnat reservoir condition, initial (at the beginning of steamdrive)-rnbubble pressure ratio and average permeability. The statisticalrnmodel ranked the properties on a standardized score scale. Arnpredicted score close to one hundred indicates a highrnprobability of success. Supported by this numerical model, wernselected the La Salina reservoir (La Rosa Formation, LakernMaracaibo, Western Venezuela) as a potentially successfulrnreservoir to apply steamflood technology.rnIn addition, unsuccessful projects from two differentrnreservoirs (the Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1, and BuenarnVista Hills, both in the USA) were analyzed, to understand thernreasons for failure. Several reasons were identified, such as:rnpoor reservoir characterization, thief zones and carbon dioxidernformation by decomposition of reservoir minerals.
